In 1982 Rachel moved to New York City to pursue her career as a rock drummer. She started her own band Vacuum Bag and later joined Das Furlines.
In the late 1980s she wrote, produced, and starred the cult film “What About Me”, a cinema verite portrait of the East Village, working with an ensemble cast of NYC's punk rock luminaries. The film was ranked #64 of “The Greatest Independent Films of the 20th Century” by The New Yorker in 2023.
